Contortion Table for Flexibility Circus Arts

Writer: ZoharZohar

In the world of contortion, every piece of equipment serves a purpose and helps to enhance the artistry and presentation of the performer. One of the most essential tools is a contortion table: an elevated platform designed to support extreme flexibility movements and poses, and help the audience appreciate better the artist. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned contortionist, understanding the function of a contortion table can offer insight into how performers execute their mesmerizing routines and bring you new ideas for your training and acts.

In today’s blog post we will be talking about:

  • Personal thoughts

If you rather watch a video, have a look at the unboxing of my current contortion table. I have spent YEARS searching for one with an affordable price.

What is a Contortion Table?

A contortion table is a raised platform, often custom-built to provide a stable yet comfortable surface for contortionists to perform on. These tables come in different sizes and materials, but they typically feature a firm base to ensure they hold the weight and movement of the artist. Some tables are minimalistic, while others are designed with aesthetics in mind, matching the theme of a performance. Below you see my contortion table, with elegant lines and features in black.

Usually, contortion tables are custom made meeting the requirements of the artist. In my case, as a forward bend contortionist with 1.7m height and long legs, I needed a bigger surface than usual to fit my poses and transitions. Back bend contortionists tend to have a small diameter surface, since they can bend deeply and consequently transition with small movements. You should also be able to select the height of your contortion table. I opted for 60cm long legs, because my brain needs to get used to moving with height. However, if you are used to train with handstand canes or moving in elevated surfaces, you can even go above 1m height. All seizes are based on individual preferences.

Why is a Contortion Table Used?

Here are the four main reasons why you should be using a contortion table:

  1. Enhances Visibility for the Audience

Unlike performing on the floor, using a contortion table raises the performer, allowing the audience to appreciate every movement, bend, and pose. This is especially important in stage performances and circus shows. There is nothing sadder as a performer to arrive to a venue and realize that only the audience in the first row can see the floor. You worked hard on your act, and a contortion table ensures that the hard work will be seen and enjoyed by everyone in the venue!

  1. Protects the Costumes

Contortion tables will literally safe your costumes! Performing on the ground can lead to unnecessary wear and tear on a costume, especially when executing movements that involve sliding, twisting, or holding prolonged poses. Therefore, a contortion table helps protect delicate fabrics by providing a clean, smooth surface that minimizes friction and prevents snagging. Unlike rough or dirty floors that can damage sequins, or delicate mesh, a well-covered contortion table ensures your costume stays in top condition throughout rehearsals and performances. This is especially important for professional performers who invest in high-quality, custom-made outfits designed to enhance their stage presence. We spent a lot of money in our costumes, so we also need to ensure they stay protected!

  1. Better Angles for Training and Performance

For contortionists working on advanced poses like chest stands, elbow stands, or full cobra; a table provides an elevated surface that enables the discovery of new perspectives. It also obliges you to find smoother transitions between poses and develop spatial awareness. It also forces you to find new variations for certain poses, like the one you see me performing below.

  1. Safer Practice and Performance Space

A well-designed contortion table minimizes the risk of injury by offering a stable and firm surface. Some tables are even equipped with soft padding or coverings to ensure comfort while practicing prolonged poses.

Where can I get a Contortion Table?

If you’re looking to purchase a contortion table, there are several options to consider. Word of mouth is the best, but sometimes people do not want to share their resources (sad... but true!). In general, many circus and acrobatics equipment suppliers offer custom-built tables designed specifically for contortionists. You could also check online marketplaces like Etsy and specialized gymnastics retailers. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly alternative, some contortionists opt to modify sturdy coffee tables or platforms with non-slip padding to create their own training surface. I tried this before, but I could not find a coffee table big enough for my contortion routines. We even considered building from scratch a table for contortion. Eventually, I got mine through the recommendation of a friend at Circus for You. The whole process of purchasing the contortion table went smooth, they were reachable via email, and the shipping to Zurich (Switzerland) went without any issue. They are now building me a customized box and I can't wait!

Personal Thoughts

I am super happy that I have a contortion table, because now I am supported in my routines and creations; and every movement and pose looks more beautiful when I am on it. It truly makes a difference! In addition, having a foldable table it makes it easier to carry it around. I always dreamed about doing a street performance and now I will be able to do so with the table! First (and last time) I did a street performance was without a table and my costume got a bit destroyed... although it was worth - you can have a look at it in the new video.

A final observation I would like to share with you all is the following: getting used to performing in limited spaces and with height is a great training for your brain. If your brain is not used to this, on the day you encounter yourself performing in a venue that has these requirements, and you will face a big mental blockage. I still remember the first time I got to perform in an elevated surface: my brain freaked out, legs would shake, and it was challenging to hit all poses.
